Charlie Chaplin
Chaplin is new to us
who were razed
by rock and roll singers
breathing smoke and shouting
for money.
Suddenly,
the smoke remains
but the money's gone.
We were whimsical too,
Chaplinesque,
but thought we were clumsy,
wrong, out of place,
outcasts in an age of appetite.
Thanks to Charlie
we know it can't be helped.
We only touch
what we can love
and now are glad
that little turns to gold. from Piedras (1978)
